Physiology of Venous Return from the Foot

J. M. Pegum and W. G. Fegan

From the Clinical Research Unit of the Dublin University Department of Surgery, Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital, Dublin

Authors' Synopsis: Measurements of the pressures in the deep and superficial veins of the foot during walking and other types of exercise indicate that compression of the deep veins by the contraction of the plantar muscles or by the weight of the body pumps blood along the perforating veins into the superficial veins.
