Effect of Changes in Ventricular Rate on Cardiac Output and Central Pressures at Rest and During Exercise in Patients with Artificial Pacemakers*

From the Department of Clinical Physiology at the Thoracic Clinic and the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Karolinska Sjukhuset, Stockholm, Sweden
Present address: Institute of Cardiology, London. This work was carried out during the tenure of research fellowships from the Swedish National Association against Heart and Chest Diseases and from the Wellcome Trust.
Authors' Synopsis: The stroke volume and central pressures were measured at rest and during exercise in 22 patients with heart block, aged between 14 and 78 years. The immediate and later effects of changes in ventricular rate produced by artificial pacemaking are described, and their significance is discussed.
