In the August 1998 issue of Cardiovascular Research at the occasion of the congress of the European Society of Cardiology in Vienna we commented on the increase in submissions from Europe from 1992 to 1997 [1]. Now, one year later at the occasion of the 1999 version of the same congress in Barcelona, we present statistical data on the number of submissions, publications and reviewer’s reports from Europe. Fig. 1 shows that the number of submissions in 1998 was, again, higher (571) than in all preceding years. Fig. 2 shows that for the first time in the history of Cardiovascular Research the number of publications from Europe exceeded 50%. Fig. 2 also demonstrates – on a percentage scale – that there were more publications than submissions from Europe in 1998, indicating increased quality of European cardiovascular research. Table 1 shows detailed information on the geographical distribution of the number of submissions, publications and reviewer’s reports in 1998. At first glance the column on published papers may appear peculiar, because it shows decimal numbers. This is caused by the fact that papers may be published by authors from different countries. A paper f.e. published by Norwegian and German authors has been assigned for 50% to Norway and for the other 50% to Germany. Most submissions (12.3%) ánd publications (17.3%) came from Germany, whereas most reviewer’s reports on 223 original published papers in 1998 originated from the United Kingdom (13.6%). Because of the delay caused by the peer review system and the delay between acceptance and publication, publication and submission percentages cannot easily be compared, unless they are stable over years. Countries with recent increases in submissions as Greece and Spain have less reviewers in our database. One reason for this is that reviewers are a.o. recruited from the group of authors of published papers.

Table 1 Absolute and percentual number of submissions, publications and reviewer’s reports for published papers for all contributing European countries in 1998. Decimal numbers for published papers are caused by papers published by authors from different countries. From 281 papers 223 were original contributions. We received 618 reviewer’s reports on these 223 original papers (reviews were excluded). Each original paper received 2.8 reviewer’s reports

Fig. 3 shows the percentage of submitted and published papers from Germany and the United Kingdom over the past years. Trends for both countries are opposite over the last years with increases for Germany and decreases for the United Kingdom, but both countries have in common that in 1998 the percentage of published papers was higher than the percentage of submitted papers.

Finally, Fig. 4 shows the number of submissions and reviewers active for Cardiovascular Research from Spain, the host of the 1999 congress of the European Society of Cardiology. The number of Spanish reviewers active for Cardiovascular Research started to increase since 1996. The number of submitted manuscripts increased steadily since 1992 with 21 manuscripts in 1998.
