Reducing the backlog and improving the impact
In recent years, the number of submitted manuscripts has increased from circa 60 per month to 90 per month. Despite a decreased acceptance rate, which was about 28% in 1998 compared to 35% in previous years, the interval between acceptance and publication has increased to an unacceptable 7 months. We are pleased to announce that Elsevier Science and the European Society of Cardiology have agreed to publish an extra issue in 1999 at no extra cost for the subscribers. Thus in August 1999 Cardiovascular Research will publish both a regular issue and the spotlight issue on Nitric Oxide and the Cadiovascular System.
There is further good news. As shown in Fig. 1, the last official impact factor of 1997 was 2.88. Our calculations predict an impact factor for 1998 of 3.11 and for 1999 of 3.47!
