Effect of Transient Resistance Changes on Atrial Septal Defects and Other Intracardiac Shunts*

Present address for reprints: The Prince Henry Hospital, Little Bay, N.S.W., Australia.
Author's Synopsis: The variability of the estimated left to right shunt, using a nitrous oxide method, was assessed in 22 patients with intracardiac defects. With both spontaneous and drug-induced changes in resistance there was a correlation between the changes in the ratio of pulmonary to systemic blood flow and the relative resistance. It appears that the relative resistance to outflow from the two ventricles is an important determinant of the flow ratio.
