Haem Biosynthesis in the Heart Muscle of Man and the Pig
From the University Department of Medicine, Gardiner Institute, Western Infirmary, and Stobhill General Hospital, Glasgow
Authors' Synopsis: Using radioisotopic techniques, haem synthesis has been studied in human and pig cardiac muscle. High levels of haemsynthetase and
-aminolaevulic acid dehydrase have been demonstrated, and newly-formed haem has been traced to myoglobin. The effect of iron upon these enzymes has been studied, and the relevance of these findings to iron storage diseases is discussed.
