Movements of the Mitral Valve Annulus
From the Department of Medicine (Clinical Cardiology) and the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London
Authors' Synopsis: Eight patients with normal mitral valves and seven patients with a mitral prosthesis were studied by angiocardiography and the movement of the mitral ring analysed. The atrioventricular ring moved in an identical fashion in the two groups, although the papillary muscles and chordae tendineae had been resected in the group with a prosthesis. Either the papillary muscles are not important in governing the movement of the annulus or their function can be performed by other portions of cardiac muscle.
